Hi, group.  Sorry if this problem has been addressed, but I couldn't find it here.  I can't seem to move word documents from the computer to my Kindle.  It's hooked up via USB, but when I drag and drop Microsoft Word docs into the DOC file of the Kindle, they don't show up there on the device.  Has anybody had this happen?  Thanks.

I think you have to email them via your amazon kindle email account to get them converted to kindle-friendly format. Amazon does this for free.  See the manual on how to email documents to your kindle.

Thanks.  I tried that earlier and it still didn't work.  I'll give it another shot, though.

The manual says that .doc is an acceptable format, and that's what these are.  Hmm...

No, .doc is not an acceptable format.  It is acceptable for conversion, though.  Perhaps that is what you missed.  You have to enable the email address you are sending from on the Manage Your Kindle page.  I forget what section.  This keeps spam from coming in to your Kindle.

When you say emailing didn't work, do you mean you had no response to the email or you got the converted file into the documents folder and it still didn't show up on the Kindle?

Both, actually.  The first time, the converted file came back, but I was unable to transfer it to the DOC directory on my Kindle; it simply didn't appear there after I dragged and dropped.  Since then, there has been no response to the files I sent to my Kindle email address.  It's a puzzler.

That should be the "documents" directory on your Kindle.

Did you authorize the email address you sent the document from on your Manage Your Kindle page?  You have to do that, or the email will be ignored.

You can also download Mobipocket Creator, Publisher edition from mobipocket.com, or Calibre (both free) to convert documents yourself.

Susan, yes, it's the "documents" directory.  And I may have misspoke myself earlier.  The documents *do* show up in the Kindle's documents directory on the computer, but when I unplug it and check the DOC directory on the Kindle itself, there's nothing there but the help manual.

And yes, the Kindle email address is authorized.  It worked the first time I sent a document.  Well, "worked" in the sense that it converted it.  I was still unable to see it on my Kindle after moving it there.

Have you tried a reset on the Kindle?  That often fixes weird problems.

I assume that when you say you are checking the documents directory on the Kindle, you mean the Home Page.

That's right, the "Docs" at the top of the page after you poke the little house icon.

Maybe I should try the reset, Susan.  That means you have to re-register, too, right?

No, not the factory reset, just a soft reset.  You won't have to re-register.  It's similar to a reboot.

Rob, are you talking about a Fire?
I just copied a Word doc to the documents folder on my Fire.  Then I ejected the Fire from my computer.  I went to Home - Docs and I do not see my file.  All I have is my user's guide and my notice from when my Prime trial expired.

I also tried to send a file using the new Send to Kindle program on my computer and that works correctly.  I can see the file that I sent in the Doc area.

Off to experiment some more!

Tried the drag and drop method with a PDF and it shows up as expected.  So I pulled out the User's Guide and here's an abbreviated version of the Docs content area on the Fire:

"To access personal documents that you transfer to your Kindle Fire, tap Docs on the Home screen.  You can send Microsoft Word (DOC, DOCX), PDF, HTML, TXT, RTF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, PRC, and MOBI files to your Kindle and read them in Kindle format.  You can also read documents in PDF format (sic) natively."

The emphasis on send is mine.  So you can send different files types to the Fire either with the Send utility or through email.  But the only type of tile you can drag into the documents folder yourself is a PDF.

Andra, yes, it's a Fire.  Okay, I just dragged and dropped a PDF, and that worked!  I don't know how I missed (or misread) the passsage that you quoted.  Thanks!

No worries Rob.  I didn't catch it the first time either.  Glad I was able to help.
