Sorry if this has been asked before. I was at Target read to by the Kindle (basic not touch- I can't stand the idea of finger prints on my screen) and the associate told me you couldn't pay to remove the ads after buying if you didn't like them, and they didn't have the non special offer Kindle in stock. I thought I read here where you could. Does anyone know for sure? Thanks.

Unless Amazon has made changes recently, the Target employee doesn't know what they are talking about.

As far as I'm aware you can't pay to remove the ads.
Best wishes, Stephen Livingston.

Yes you can.

This is what I see when I go to my Kindle with SO on Amazon.com

"This Kindle is currently subscribed to Special Offers and was purchased at a subsidized price ($40 discount).

Amazon is able to offer the Kindle at a subsidized price by delivering Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers.

By unsubscribing you will be charged $40 (plus applicable tax).

Of course when I purchased my KindleSO the price difference was only $25 ($114 instead of $139) so I would actually be paying more to get rid of them than I saved in the first place.

On another note, you can not see fingerprints on the Kindle Touch unless you angle it sharply and catch the light just right - an angle you can't read at anyway. Every once and a while, I wipe it with a microfibre cloth just for my own piece of mind, to know that it's clean... but I promise, you can't see the fingerprints during reading.

And I just verified the kindle I bought at target for Christmas, and it says it will be $30 to unsubscribe to the special offers.

Note that the price to 'opt out' of the ads is different depending on which Kindle you're buying.

It's $50 to opt out if you have the Keyboard Kindle.
It's $40 to opt out if you have the Touch
It's $30 to opt out if you have the Basic Kindle

Once you have opted out, you can opt back in at anytime.  And then out again. And then in again.  Etc. Smiley

If you originally purchased without the offers/ads, you can opt in for free.

All correct answers so I will not address the questions that have been answered already.  Instead I want to address some of the questions that were not answered already.  I have both an ipad and a kindle fire at home that are both touch screens and let me tell you the amount of finger buildup is terrible sometimes.  However you can fix that with a screen protector (this is a thin piece of see through materiel that will let you see anything that is on the otherside but it gets all the smudges not the screen (personally I don't think this will work because now you get the smudges on the protector not the actual screen.) The next thing you can do is to buy something call monitor cleaner and is sold in any office supply store such as Office Depot or Staples, here are some links to get you started - to point you in the right direction:

Note that the Kindle Touch does not have a glossy screen, it's a matte finish.  If I hold it just right, I can see finger prints, but it's not anything like the finger prints on the iPad or the Kindle Fire.

Just for interest, here's what the User's Guide says about cleaning the Kindle Touch screen:

Quote
Maintaining Y our Kindle

Do not use your Kindle or its accessories in rain, or near sinks or other wet locations. Take care not to spill any food or liquid in your Kindle. If your device does get wet, unplug all cables, turn off the wireless (tap Menu, and choose Turn Wireless Off) and let the screen revert to the screen saver. Wait for the device to dry completely before pressing the power button to wake again. Do not attempt to dry your Kindle with an external heat source, such as a microwave oven or hair dryer. Clean the screen with a soft cloth; be careful not to wipe it with anything abrasive. When carrying your Kindle in a bag or briefcase, keep a cover on to avoid scratches

I quoted the whole thing in case anyone was planning on microwaving their Kindle.  Wink

Glossy backlit screens do get lots of fingerprints on them (though I don't find them as noticeable when the screen is on, mostly when it's off) - I think it's the very reason why people assume the Kindle Touch will be the same. But it's not.

Just want to ditto this. I've never seen any prints on mine. I think you really have to tilt to find them unlike my iPhone and iPad.
