Looking for answers on if its is possible to send books from Calibre and have them sync on more than one Kindle device since it seems I have a boat of these things in the family since Christmas.  I want to be able to send one of my books and then be able to pick up any Kindle in the house and read where I left off.

Until recently, the instructions in our FAQ regarding syncing books http://www.kindleboards.com/index.php/topic,73465.msg1183688.html#msg1183688 were about the best you could do.

However, Amazon recently changed the way personal documents were handled, so it may be that if you send the books to your Kindle "cloud" by emailing them to your free.kindle.com account, they will sync between the Kindles.

I've only got one Kindle, and they haven't added the functionality to the Kindle for PC/Android etc apps yet, so I can't test it.  Sad

You won't be able to do it if you transfer the books onto your Kindle(s) any other way, eg by cable or by using Calibre's built in website - it relies on the Amazon servers to do the sync.

Experiment with it and let us know how you get on!  Grin

To use Calibre, you download the book to your PC then load it into Calibre. When you download to PC, you have to designate which Kindle the book will be going onto. So, you can't download a book for Kindle A, put it into Calibre then load it onto Kindle B, unless it's a public domain book with no DRM. About the best you can do is to create multiple libraries in Calibre, download the book for each Kindle, put it into the correct library then upload to the correct Kindle.

As for synching between the Kindles ... I have only one, so no idea.

Hi Matthew, welcome to Kindleboards!

Syncing between devices relies on several things.

First you have to have syncing turned on, on your 'manage your kindle' page at Amazon. This is on by default so if you haven't turned it off, you're good to go.

Next, all the devices you want to sync have to be registered to the same account. If you have different accounts, even though you may have bought the same books, you can't sync them.

Last of all, the books have to be on the Amazon servers so must either have been purchased from Amazon, or be a compatible personal document or non DRM'd book from another source which you've emailed to your Kindle via Amazon. It doesn't matter if you've subsequently uploaded them to Calibre, changed the metadata etc and then downloaded them back to the Kindle. As long as they're in the Amazon cloud, they should sync.
